Our Diverse Learning unit
Liverpool Boys High School currently has three Diverse Learning (DL) classes. These classes provide specialist support, for eligible, students who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Our DL unit is a safe and welcoming place where students who need extra support can learn and grow. We create small, caring classes where students can learn at their own pace, build confidence and access opportunities in a safe and inclusive space.
How we support students
Students in our support unit learn through:
- small group and one-on-one teaching
- lessons matched to their goals and abilities
- specialist staff and resources
- programs that build social and emotional skills
Each student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that helps them:
- grow their literacy, numeracy and communication skills
- make friends and work well with others
- become more independent and confident
- manage emotions and behaviour
Our lessons, support and learning plans give students regular check-ins, clear communication with families and close tracking of their strengths and areas for improvement. These plans improve engagement, support stronger learning outcomes and guide smooth transitions through school and beyond.
- Every DL class has a Teacher and a School Learning Support Officer (SLSO)
- Class sizes are smaller than mainstream classes, to help support student’s needs
- Each student will have planning undertaken for their IEP that captures their needs and goals
- DL projects mirror that of mainstream, however with added levels of support and differentiation
Students in DL have the same opportunity as students in mainstream classes to participate in school and community activities, such as school sports and assemblies.
They will also have access to:
- Transport assistance under the Assisted School Travel Program, if they are eligible.
- Regular Community Access activities to provide life skills, travel training and exposure to different community opportunities.
- Additional wellbeing activities to support social and emotional learning.
- Access to either the regular or Life Skills curriculum based on their required needs.
How we work with families and specialists
We work closely with families and specialists to support every student. Our teachers stay in touch with parents and carers to share progress and plan next steps.
We also work with therapists, counsellors and health professionals so students get the same support across school and home.
